Overview

A practical energy efficiency specification for community comfort

Palm Lake Resort Bethania required a practical energy efficiency solution for a large community facility. With Queensland's warm climate placing heavy demand on cooling systems, the priority was to reduce solar heat gain through the building's glass while maintaining natural light and visual comfort for residents, staff and visitors.

Ultra Tint assessed the building's glass area and recommended film selections based on orientation, solar exposure and the comfort needs of a commercial community environment.

The challenge

Queensland heat, community comfort and exposed glazing

The facility needed a film strategy that could help manage heat without treating every elevation as the same problem. North-west exposed glazing needed particular attention because afternoon sun can be punishing in South East Queensland.

  • Maintaining comfort in a community environment used by residents, staff and visitors.
  • Managing Queensland heat through large areas of exposed glass.
  • Reducing cooling demand placed on HVAC systems where practical.
  • Addressing more exposed north-west facing glazing with a stronger solar control specification.
  • Balancing comfort, performance, appearance and budget across the whole facility.
  • Selecting film around climate-appropriate performance data, not generic insulation numbers alone.

Why SHGC mattered

The right metric for a warm climate

U-value relates more to heat loss and insulation. It matters in some climates, but it does not tell the whole story when the main problem is hot sun entering through glass.

SHGC, or Solar Heat Gain Coefficient, measures how much solar heat passes through the glass. In Bethania and the wider South East Queensland climate, cooling demand is generally the larger comfort and energy issue. That made reducing SHGC central to the recommendation.

The solution

Two film specifications matched to exposure

The film strategy separated the more exposed north-west facing glazing from the remaining windows and doors, allowing the recommendation to respond to solar exposure, appearance and performance needs.

More exposed north-west glazing

Area
Targeted high-exposure areas
Purpose
Strong solar heat gain control for the most exposed sections.
  • Prioritised solar heat gain control
  • Suited to exposed Queensland orientations

Remaining Windows and Doors

MEP Films V28SR Vista Series

Area
Broader remaining glazing
Purpose
Solar heat reduction, optical clarity, natural light and consistent external appearance.
  • Balanced heat and glare reduction
  • Specified for clarity and consistent presentation

Film ranges and product names may change over time. Ultra Tint now specifies current equivalent products based on the same performance objectives.

Outcome

A specification built around comfort and cooling efficiency

  • The project specification covered more than 1,000 sqm of glass.
  • Film selections were matched to building orientation and thermal performance requirements.
  • The strategy prioritised resident comfort, reduced solar heat gain and practical cooling support.
  • The assessment showed how film selection changed by orientation, exposure and comfort needs.
