Grand Plaza Shopping Centre Skylight Window Film

Commercial rooftop skylight film installation in Browns Plains using External Silver 20.

Grand Plaza Shopping Centre in Browns Plains needed a practical solution to reduce heat coming through the overhead skylight glass throughout the centre. Ultra Tint removed old film and installed new External Silver 20 across 1,038 glass panels, covering approximately 1,050 square metres of rooftop glazing.

Overview

A large-scale skylight heat control project across the centre.

Grand Plaza Shopping Centre had a large-scale heat issue caused by sunlight passing through the overhead skylight glass across the centre.

With 1,038 individual glass panels and approximately 1,050 square metres of glazing, the project required careful planning, rooftop access coordination and staged installation across multiple roof sections.

Ultra Tint completed the removal of the existing film, prepared the glass and installed External Silver 20 to improve solar control across the overhead glazing.

The problem

Excessive heat through overhead glass.

The overhead skylights were allowing excessive heat into the centre, affecting comfort below and increasing solar load through the roof glazing.

Because the glass was located on rooftop skylight structures, this was not a standard internal commercial tinting job. The work had to be completed externally, on the roof, where wind, rain, surface conditions and access all affected the installation schedule.

The existing film also had to be removed before the new film could be applied, adding a significant preparation stage to the project.

The solution

External Silver 20 installed panel by panel.

Ultra Tint completed a full external skylight film replacement across the nominated roof sections. External Silver 20 was selected to help reduce solar heat gain through the overhead glass while maintaining the function of the existing skylight system.

  • Removing old film from the existing skylight panels
  • Cleaning and preparing the glass
  • Installing External Silver 20 film externally
  • Completing panel-by-panel installation across 1,038 glass panels
  • Managing staged rooftop access and site safety requirements
  • Working around weather and wind conditions throughout the project

Project challenges

More than a standard commercial window film installation.

  • Scale: 1,038 panels and approximately 1,050 sqm of glass
  • Access: rooftop work across multiple skylight sections
  • Weather: installation windows depended on dry conditions
  • Wind: exposed rooftop film handling required careful timing and control
  • Preparation: old film removal before new film installation
  • Staging: work had to be coordinated across different roof sections and access zones

Large external film installations require consistent conditions. Wind, surface temperature, rain, moisture and access all influence how efficiently and safely the work can be completed.

The result

Approx. 1,050 sqm of overhead glazing treated.

Ultra Tint completed the removal and replacement of film across the overhead skylight glass, treating approximately 1,050 square metres of glazing.

The upgraded skylight film system was installed to help reduce heat transfer through the centre's roof glazing and improve solar control across the affected areas.

This project demonstrates Ultra Tint's capability with large-scale commercial film work, particularly where access, safety, weather and technical installation conditions need to be managed across a high-volume glass area.

FAQ

Grand Plaza project questions.

How many glass panels were treated at Grand Plaza Shopping Centre?

Ultra Tint removed old film and installed new film across 1,038 individual skylight glass panels.

How much glass was covered?

The total treated glass area was approximately 1,050 square metres.

What film was used?

The project used External Silver 20, installed externally to the rooftop skylight glazing.

Why was the job weather dependent?

The film was installed on rooftop skylight glass, so wind, rain, moisture and surface conditions affected when installation could safely and properly proceed.

What was the main objective?

The main objective was to reduce heat coming through the overhead skylight glass throughout the shopping centre.

Need heat control for large commercial glass areas?

Ultra Tint works on commercial window film projects across shopping centres, offices, marine facilities and large commercial glass systems.
