RACV is WRONG about Tint

“The world will never decline faster
than when it is run by uneducated people”

The following is a public correction of the inaccurate and uneducated views of the RACV regarding the benefits of window tinting films for motor vehicles, and a public challenge for them to substantiate their claims instead of using disclaimer phrases such as “The perceived benefits..”, and “RACV believes there is a lack of evidence..”. Many Australian drivers look to large motoring groups like the RACV for advice, and it is therefore important that the information they provide is up-to-date, accurate and informative.

RACV Official Position.

The following excerpts have been taken directly from the RACV website at the following link:

Window Tinting – RACV position

“RACV believes there is a lack of evidence that tinting provides any significant benefits in keeping a car cool. Features such as air conditioning will do this job more effectively.”

“As an alternative to window tinting, RACV recommends drivers and passengers wear sunglasses as an equally effective means of reducing excessive glare.”

“The reduction in ultra-violet (UV) light and any resulting reduction in glare as a result of window tinting are minimal.”

RACV – “Window tinting advocates have argued that tinting cuts out ultraviolet (UV) rays, which in turn represents a lower risk of contracting skin cancer and other associated skin diseases. In fact, untinted window glass cuts out most harmful UV rays.”

THE FACTS: The Ultra Violet radiation spectrum is broken up into three parts; UV-A, UV-B and UV-C. UV-C rays do not reach the surface of the earth as they are blocked by our upper atmosphere (ozone layer). Untinted glass can stop up to 97% of UV-B rays, but only 37% of cancer causing UV-A. Independently tested window tinting films have been proven to block 99.9% of UV-A and UV-B rays.

In fact, in 2004 the Australian Cancer Council released their own public Position Statement on the benefits of window tinting for cars.

CANCER COUNCIL AUSTRALIA – Position Statement – Window Tinting

Keeping a car cool.

Prevention is always better than cure. The RACV’s views on air conditioning being a more effective method is little more than a cure for the heat that has already entered the vehicle. Window Tinting, is the prevention. Vehicle air conditioning, regardless of the RACV’s opinions, does generate more load on the cars engine. This in turn, increases fuel consumption, and therefore vehicle emissions. Proof of this can be seen on a much larger scale as power companies encourage people to set their home air conditioning to 24 degrees so as not to over load the power grid during peak demand.

Also, air conditioning gas (known as R134A) creates an environmentally hazardous by-product during it’s manufacturing process which Europe are now paying countries like China to dispose of safely under the International Carbon Trading Scheme.

Window Tinting film have a much cleaner manufacturing process, and once installed on the car have zero ongoing costs. Automotive films such as 3M Crystalline have been internationally proven to block 99.9% of UV plus over 97% of Infra-Red radiation, which in fact is the true contributor to the heat you can feel inside your car.
